Power Plant Explosion in Middletown - By: Stefanie Parillo

On this past Sunday, February 7th, there was an explosion at the Kleen Power Plant in Middletown, CT, approximately at 11:30 am. At least five workers were killed on-site, and even more sustained injuries. At the moment, the total number of casualties is expected to remain at five, but there are still searches in progress.

The Kleen Power Plant was a plant that had been under construction for years and was almost upon completion. This power plant was built to produce electricity through the burning of natural gas. Many emergency rescue teams, some even with rescue dogs, converged on the scene, airlifting injured workers by helicopter to local area hospitals.

Scott Brown - The 41st Vote - By: Tim Dean

January 19, 2010 brought a big sigh of relief for everyone troubled over the massive $1 trillion dollar health care bill being jammed through Congress. Massachusetts, one of the bluest states in our country, saw a Republican, Scott Brown, defeat Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley, for the late Senator Ted Kennedy’s vacant U.S. Senate seat. The people of Massachusetts sent a clear message by electing the first Republican Senator since 1972.

They, like many people across this country, believe the healthcare overhaul is going too strong, too fast. So what does the election of Scott Brown mean for the rest of this country? Well, for the Democrats and President Obama it means one thing: trouble. With this election, the Democrats have lost their 60-seat filibuster proof majority in the Senate. The Congressional Democrats and President Obama have to be creative if they are going to get the healthcare bill passed through the Senate.

7.0 Earthquake Devastates Haiti - By: Nick Addamo

Hundreds of thousands are feared to be dead in Haiti after the strongest earthquake in 200 years for this Caribbean nation. The 7.0 magnitude quake that struck on the afternoon of January 12th left vast numbers of Haitians, dazed and injured, sitting in the middle of streets as homes and buildings crumbled around them. Even more are undoubtedly trapped within the rubble of these structures in addition to those who lost their lives. All communications were destroyed in Port-Au-Prince, the country’s capital and home to an estimated 2 million people, making it nearly impossible to make the extent of the damage known to the rest of the world. Among the buildings destroyed was the National Palace of the Haitian President, as well as countless hospitals, schools, and even the city’s main prison. Current estimates put the total deaths at as high as 500,000, along with 3 million others in need of aid. Despite these terrifying numbers, more investigation is needed in order to confirm the scope of the destruction. With the nation’s serious damage and loss of life, they are desperate for help.
