7.0 Earthquake Devastates Haiti - By: Nick AddamoHundreds of thousands are feared to be dead in Haiti after the strongest earthquake in 200 years for this Caribbean nation. The 7.0 magnitude quake that struck on the afternoon of January 12th left vast numbers of Haitians, dazed and injured, sitting in the middle of streets as homes and buildings crumbled around them. Even more are undoubtedly trapped within the rubble of these structures in addition to those who lost their lives. All communications were destroyed in Port-Au-Prince, the country’s capital and home to an estimated 2 million people, making it nearly impossible to make the extent of the damage known to the rest of the world. Among the buildings destroyed was the National Palace of the Haitian President, as well as countless hospitals, schools, and even the city’s main prison. Current estimates put the total deaths at as high as 500,000, along with 3 million others in need of aid. Despite these terrifying numbers, more investigation is needed in order to confirm the scope of the destruction. With the nation’s serious damage and loss of life, they are desperate for help.
